JUSTA’s Global Just Designs has worked with Kem Ajachel for almost five years as the main textile collective for our designs. In 2013, JUSTA asked Kem Ajachel lead organizer Flora, what more would you like to create? Flora responded that she wished to expand the knowledge of natural dying in her hometown village of Panajachel. With that dream, JUSTA joined with other partner organizations to build a natural plant dye demonstration garden that now serves as a workshop space for group and tourists, providing a returned income stream for sustainability and future growth.
Sabor del Sol, meaning “Taste of the Sun” is a small women’s cooperative formed in 2014 in San Marcos La Laguna. A coalition of local and international community members, along with several international NGOs came together and formulated the question, how might we organize ourselves to generate accessible and sustainable work in San Marcos? Local stakeholders from all parts of the community gathered for a month long session of meetings to generate ideas for this challenge, and in the end came out with the idea of forming a new women’s cooperative to provide employment and opportunity.
